Biography James Fenimore Cooper was a popular writer of the 19th century born September 15th 1789 and died September 14th 1851. His writing career began by James making a wager with his wife on whether he could write a better book than the one she was reading, and after that he continued to pursue writing. His first major success that really got his career going was his novel The Spy, that he published in 1821. Later he went on to write his most famous piece of literature, The Last of the Mohicans which was published in 1826 and was set in the time period 1757.
